Request a Ranger at Natural Tunnel

 

This program gives families and small groups a chance to engage in activities not otherwise scheduled during their visit to the park. Contact Ethan Howes at (276) 940-1643 or email ethan.howes@dcr.virginia.gov to schedule a program of interest during designated times.

Maximum group size is 10. Programs must be scheduled one day in advance to the proposed time. Have an interest but don’t see it listed? Ask the ranger for more options.

Secret Life of Trees: Discover the various tree species at the park and decorate a tree cookie to take home.
Tour of the Wilderness Road Blockhouse: A personalized tour of the Blockhouse area, as well as a look inside the Blockhouse.
Survival Skills: Learn about what it takes to survive in the wild. Try your hand at building a shelter or starting a fire.
Naturalist Niche: Enjoy a guided hike with a ranger on the trail of your choice. Discover the trees, wildlife, and other unique features you might normally miss while hiking.
All Dolled Up: Ever wonder what dolls of the 18th century frontier looked like or what they were made of? Learn how the discarded husks of corn can become a child’s best friend and make your own corn husk doll.
Yesterday’s Menu: Learn the unique adaptations of owls. Dissect your very own pellet to discover what your owl had for dinner last night.
