Hogslop String Band 2024

Hogslop String Band at. Carter Family Fold

Hogslop String Band returns to the Carter Family Fold, Sat., March 16.

Staying true to tradition while maintaining a bold irreverence is something that rarely goes hand-in-hand, but Hogslop String Band manages to walk that line. With their roots in old-time string band music, and their energy based in wild rock- and-roll; you could almost call them punk purists.

It’s an unlikely combination, but given the talents of singer and fiddler Kevin Martin; guitarist, harmonica player and singer Gabriel Kelley; mandolin player and singer Will Harrison; banjo player and singer Daniel Binkley, and bassist and all-round entertainer Pickle, they pull it off with natural ease. The name alone hints at their wacky ways, but catching them live will give you a true sense of these bizarre, seemingly contradictory descriptions.

They thrive on crossing genres, casting off the confines of straight old-time and bluegrass, delving into a deep repertoire of rock, folk, psychedelic, and original numbers that can only be described as,”The Hogslop Sound.” It’s clear that these guys are going places, and they’ve quickly become one of the most unique and exhilarating outfits in live music today.

The Carter Family Fold is celebrating its 50th anniversary throughout 2024. Celebration concerts kick-off in March with special monthly concerts, leading up to a special “Appalachia Rising” Concert on April 28 and a huge 50th Anniversary musical event on August 3.

The Fold opens at 6 p.m., with shows beginning at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults and $2 for children, six to 11.

The Carter Family Memorial Music Center is a non-profit organization serving fans and supporters of old-time country and folk music through the presentation of weekly performances in Hiltons, Virginia.

We invite you to visit the Carter Family Fold for yourself every Saturday evening, from March to November, and immerse yourself in history at The Carter Family Memorial Music Center, where country music planted its roots and the legendary Johnny Cash held his final live performance.

The Carter Family’s legacy began in 1927 with Alvin “A.P.” Carter, Sara Carter and Maybelle Carter. The trio recorded their first musical session as part of the “Bristol Sessions” and were credited for inventing the everchanging genre we now know as “country.” For nearly a century, the Carter Family has been honored and embraced by artists and fans across the globe, and their story has been featured in major publications such as The New York Times, LIFE Magazine and Rolling Stone.

A.P. Carter’s daughter, Janette Carter, founded the Carter Family Memorial Center in 1979 to celebrate the illustrious lives of the original Carter Family and keep the tradition of bluegrass and folk music alive. The Carter Family Fold is now directed by Janette’s daughter, Rita Forrester. Visitors can also tour the cabin and birthplace of A.P. Carter, which has been relocated from its original site to a spot only a few steps from the Carter Family Fold building and the Carter Family Memorial Museum.
