succelents “Let it grow: Gardening Series”

March 04, 2017 10 a.m. -12 p.m.

This series of workshops is a collaborative effort by Natural Tunnel State Park, the Virginia Cooperative Extension, the Scott County Master Gardeners, and the Education Council of the Cove Ridge Foundation and Advisory Board. Each workshop will be held at the Cove Ridge Center at Natural Tunnel State Park. The workshops are $5 each or $12 for all three. All participants must register no later than the Wednesday prior to each workshop. You can do so by calling the Cove Ridge Center at 276-940-2696 or by emailing Gretchen.Cope@dcr.virginia.gov . A minimum of 10 participants is required for each workshop. Some time may be spent outdoors so please dress for the weather.

February 11 Natives and Invasives—practical solutions on identifying and controlling invasive plant species and the utilization of our best natives in your landscaping.

Each participant will take a small native plant home.

March 4 Gardening in a New Light—information on sheet compost gardening, raised beds, and more.

Each participant will have the opportunity to sow seeds to take home.

Are you looking for a seasonal Job? Do you like the outdoors? If you said yes to either question, Natural Tunnel State Park is a place for you. Natural Tunnel is looking for friendly, dependable, hardworking, individuals to be a part of the “Tunnel Team” for the summer of 2017. A variety of positions are available. Start your future with Natural Tunnel State Park. Stop by the main office between 8:30 a.m. – 4:15 p.m. to pick-up a State of Virginia Application and a description of positions available. During the month of March the park will start to schedule interviews.

“Full Moon Hike”

February 10, 2017 5:30 p.m.

Have you ever hiked by the light of the moon or sit quietly to listen to sounds around dusk time during the winter? Be a part of a unique Natural Tunnel experience. Hike to the Gazebo to see the moon rise. Park guides will talk about the thrilling night life and share stories about the moon. The hike will take place along a semi-moderate trail with a dirt/grass base. Groups will be hiking round trip 1.2 miles. Sturdy hiking shoes required along with headlamps or flashlights for the return back. Dress for the weather; maybe a little breezy at the Gazebo. This is a free program departing from the Blockhouse parking lot.

“Vegetable Conference and Seed Swap”

February 25, 2017 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

If you are homeowner or commercial grower this conference is for you. Learn about new ways to treat pesky insects from your plants. Hear about new growing options. If you have seeds or looking to get some seed, there will be a seed swap towards the end of the event. Pre-registration is required or for more information call (276) 452-2772. Program will take place at the Cove Ridge Center starting at 10 a.m. Admission is $5 per person. This program is made possible through the partnership of Natural Tunnel State Park, Cooperative Extension, and the Scott County Master Gardeners.
